Holiday inventory financing

Holiday Inventory Must Sell Before Its Payment Comes Due

A gift retailer can obtain a discount by ordering a large batch in October. The merchandise sells mainly before year-end, while any financing continues afterward. The owner needs to decide whether the discount outweighs markdowns and the risk of leftover stock.

The first 700 units tell a different story from the last 300

Suppose 1,000 sets cost $20 each, 700 sell at $40, 200 clear at $22, and 100 remain unsold. Receipts are $32,400 against a $20,000 purchase, leaving $12,400 before freight, staff, processing fees, returns, rent contribution, and financing. That is not the $20,000 gross profit suggested by multiplying 1,000 by the full ticket spread. If 100 of the full-price sales instead remain unsold, receipts fall by $4,000 before any additional storage or financing cost.

Separate proven bestsellers from untested designs. The retailer could place a 700-unit initial order and seek a reorder, but a long supplier lead time risks missing late shoppers. Compare the supplier discount on the full batch with the premium and timing risk of smaller deliveries using prior sell-through by product, not storewide optimism.

Put the October deposit, delivery balance, weekly sales collections, returns, and markdown dates on the same calendar as any proposed payment. If the loan cannot be retired from conservative collected holiday cash, January clearance may be too late or too small. Staple products with regular reorders can be assessed through a separate inventory cycle; the gift sets have a fixed selling window.

A weak December can also leave the store paying storage for stock that will be obsolete next season. Reducing the speculative order may sacrifice the unit discount but preserve cash for the next trading period. If payroll and rent also rise before holiday sales arrive, put those bills into the seasonal cash plan. Providers determine available terms.

The retailer can order the proven sets first and compare the discount on extra units with a January clearance case. Bring both supplier quotes and product-level sell-through to the Funding Quiz.
